Fort Myers was originally built as a military fort to protect settlers from the Seminoles; it was then used by the Union army during the Civil War. Despite its use as a fort as early as 1850, it was not an incorporated city until 1885. The city then experienced growth as a winter resort destination and was connected to the Atlantic Coast Railroad in 1904. Currently Fort Myers is the location of MLB’s Boston Red Socks Spring Training and their Red Sox Rookie league Affiliate, The Gulf Coast League Red Sox.
