Fort Myers was originally built as a military fort to protect settlers from the Seminoles; it was then used by the Union army during the Civil War. Despite its use as a fort as early as 1850, it was not an incorporated city until 1885. The city then experienced growth as a winter resort destination and was connected to the Atlantic Coast Railroad in 1904. Currently Fort Myers is the location of MLB’s Boston Red Socks Spring Training and their Red Sox Rookie league Affiliate, The Gulf Coast League Red Sox. The City of Palms also has beaches, golf courses, several parks and recreation sites available for use.

Naples, Florida is beach town full of culture and open spaces. They have several beautiful beaches, The Naples Fishing pier, Everglades National Park and several open air shopping districts. Naples is also home to The Naples Players, and Philharmonic Center for the Arts and Orchestra. Also, notable is the invention of the swamp buggy by Ed Frank, there are three swamp buggy races held each year in Naples.

Sarasota is traditionally considered a winter retreat but its’ warm temperatures and white sand beaches have made it a year around home for many. There are numerous beaches in the area and a set of keys, most popularly Lido Key and Siesta Key that lie between Sarasota and the Gulf of Mexico. Sarasota is home to the first international street painting festival in the United States, called the Sarasota Chalk Festival.
